Turning Toward God
When life gets too hard, go have a talk with God.
“Hear me, LORD, and have mercy on me. Help me, O LORD. You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy.” - Psalm 30:10-11 (NLT)
Reflection
King David was a troubled man. He made remarkable decisions, and he made terrible ones. Yet through it all, he kept turning back toward God. I sometimes wonder if that’s why his words still speak to us today. He knew what it was like to wander, and he knew what it was like to come home.

Verses like these have survived thousands of years, countless translations, and generations of readers. Somehow they still find us exactly where we are.
David was mourning something when he wrote these words. We aren’t told exactly what it was, but maybe that’s intentional. Mourning comes in many forms.
If you’ve lived long enough, you’ve mourned something too.
Maybe it was the death of someone you loved. Maybe it was the end of a relationship, the loss of a job, a dream that never came to be, or simply realizing life will never quite be what it once was. Every one of us eventually wakes up to a new normal we didn’t ask for.
I’ve had more than a few of those moments myself.
As a child, I mourned moving away from my friends and starting over at a new school. I mourned the death of friends, grandparents, in-laws, and parents. I mourned not getting the first job that I wanted desperately. I mourned the death of my dogs, Max and Mookie. I even mourned the day life shook me so hard that much of what I thought mattered suddenly didn’t. I mourned the years I believed I had wasted.
Looking back, I learned something about mourning. If we remain there too long, it begins to crowd everything else out. I couldn’t fully feel the love and support that surrounded me. I couldn’t appreciate the beauty of an ordinary day. Joy would show up for a moment, and I would push it away because somehow it didn’t seem right to experience it while I was hurting. The colors of life slowly became dull.
David understood something I think many of us eventually discover. When life becomes too heavy to carry alone, there’s really only one place left to turn. God is always there. The question has never been whether He is there.

The question is whether we'll turn toward Him, not because He promises to erase every difficult circumstance, but because He never leaves us to carry them by ourselves.
Sometimes we misunderstand what it means to turn toward God. He isn’t a magic solution that makes every problem disappear. He may not remove the circumstance we desperately wish He would. But something remarkable begins to happen when we bring our burdens to Him honestly and consistently.
He makes room.
Room to breathe. Room to notice the people who love us. Room to see hope where we couldn’t before. Room to begin living again.
I’ve found that the more often I turn toward God, the more my heart begins to change. The grief may still be there, but it no longer has complete control over me. Memories that once only brought tears slowly begin to bring gratitude. I find myself smiling again. Laughing again. Appreciating life again. Not because I’ve forgotten what I lost. Because God helped me carry it.
For me, turning toward God has become a daily habit. We walk this road together. He gives me what I need to handle whatever life throws at me, and over time He changes not only how I see my circumstances but how I live within them. I find myself looking for reasons to be thankful even on days when gratitude doesn’t come naturally.

So if you find yourself in a place where your thoughts seem dark or your heart feels heavy, turn toward God. Stay there. Keep talking with Him. Keep listening. Over time you may discover that while your circumstances haven’t changed nearly as much as you hoped, you have.
And sometimes that is where the miracle begins.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, life can be hard. Sometimes the weight of loss, disappointment, regret, or circumstances beyond our control feels more than we can carry. Help us remember that we don’t have to carry it alone. Give us the courage to turn toward You every day, especially when we feel like turning away. Make room in our hearts for hope, gratitude, and joy to return in Your time. Keep us walking toward Home, and when we stumble, lift us up and illuminate the path ahead. I pray this in the name of Jesus, my Savior and Lord. Amen.
