Am I With You?

It doesn’t seem to matter how many times we are reminded. We drift. We disconnect. We find our own way again.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. - Joshua 1:9 NIV

Reflection

Sometimes I read that and think… easier for you to say, Joshua.

You had clarity. You saw what God was doing. You lived it. Of course you could speak with confidence.

But strength? Courage? Fear? Discouragement? Those aren’t small things. In certain seasons, they feel heavy.

Really heavy.

If you are like me, there have been moments where you brought everything to God. You got on your knees or sat in a pew and laid it all out. You were honest. Clear. You trusted Him with the outcome.

For a moment, there was peace. You handed it over. The fear softened. The tears slowed.

Then you waited.

And nothing seemed to change.

What you asked for and what showed up did not line up. It felt quiet. Almost like He didn’t hear you at all.

And in those moments, Joshua’s words can feel distant. It is hard to believe God is with you wherever you go when it feels like He is nowhere to be found. You even get tired of asking what He is trying to teach you. You do not want a lesson. You just want peace. You want better days.

If you have lived long enough, you may have come out the other side of a season like that. You can look back and see pieces coming together. You can see how certain moments shaped you, prepared you, steadied you for what came next.

Not perfectly. Not completely. But enough to notice. God does not hand us the full story. He does not show us the ending. But He does stay with us in the middle of it.

Joshua was right. God is with us.

Not always in the way we want. Not always in the timing we would choose. And not always in a way we can feel.

But He is there. Not granting every outcome we ask for. Not removing every hard moment. But walking with us through all of it. Working with our choices, even when they are not great ones, and still leading us forward. Leading us home.

He does it for you. He does it for me. Even when it feels like He is not there, He is.

We drift. That part seems unavoidable. Life pulls, distractions come, doubt creeps in. But maybe the goal is not perfection. Maybe it is awareness. To notice the drift a little sooner. To turn back a little quicker. To not wander quite as far.

So maybe the better question is not, “Are you with me, God?”

Maybe it is, “Am I with You?”

And if the answer is not really… maybe it is time to step back toward Him.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for staying with us even when we struggle to feel it. Thank you for your patience and your presence in every season. Help us heal from what weighs on us. Help us see you more clearly in our lives and trust you even when things do not make sense. Strengthen us for what we face and draw us closer to you each day. Keep us rooted in you as we walk forward. I pray this in the name of Jesus, my Savior and Lord. Amen.
